"I have a son who is 8 years old and has autism. He is in the 3rd grade and is having difficulty with the concept of <, >, and =, do you have any visual aides or TEACCH methods that can help?" Louise

Answer: Lis Dolan, M. Ed, LDTC Resource Teacher

The use of >, < or = is usually a tough concept to conquer. One strategy which has proven to be a winner is a simple one to use.
Step 1: Look at both numbers being compared.
Step 2: Circle the larger number.
Step 3: Place the sign with opening pointing to the larger number. (The signs are typically referred to as the mouth of the frog or an alligator. The open mouth will always point to the larger number because the frog or alligator wants the larger food item.) If the numbers are exactly the same (digits in the same sequence) then use the = sign.
