definition
Learning Disabilities (LD) is the term given to a disorder of the central nervous system which effects mental processing. A person with LD may experience one, several, or all of the following deficits:
- difficulty understanding verbal or visual information and/or recalling stored information
- problems with organization
- difficulty with written or oral expression
- specific difficulties in reading and/or mathematics
The main indicator of LD is a significant difference between the
expected ability of an individual and his performance. Even though
a person's IQ may be in the normal range, his achievement in a specific
area may be well below normal. LD is the most common disability,
with fifty-one percent of all children in special education identified
in this category. Males are four times more likely than females
to be identified with LD.
