Long-Term Reports and Projects

Long-term reports and projects can be difficult for children with Tourette Syndrome. Below are steps parents and teachers can take to help the child:

  1. Divide the assignment into small parts with a definite time schedule.
  2. Photocopy research. Highlight main ideas and important details.
  3. Reread underlined parts. Write them on spiral-bound 3” x 5” note cards. Write only one topic on each card.
  4. Make a list of important points and assign a color to each. Create a mind map. Use this to make outline if required.
  5. Reread cards and color code.
  6. Remove cards from spiral binding. Sort by color.
  7. Reread cards. Expand mind map. Eliminate ideas that do not fit.
  8. Check outline or mind map for balance.
  9. Write first draft on the computer.
  10. Review printout. Proofread a few days later.
  11. Have an adult edit.
  12. Make corrections on computer.
  13. Continue to revise until satisfied.
  14. Print out final report.
