review:
This shoe-tying program is brought to you by Kelly Wilk, OT, one
of our contributors to the Ask
the Experts column. As an occupational therapist, Kelly brings
years of experience as a therapist to children with developmental
delays and fine motor skill delays to this kit. Often learning to
tie their shoes can be frustrating to our little ones (and their
parents and teachers!).
Kelly's kit comes with specially designed laces that are color coded, as well
as a standup flip-bound book printed in full color with actual photographs.
Each step is presented sequentially, with a photograph, using the concept of
teaching based on task analysis. When we do tasks quickly everyday, we forget
the details of how we get it done. Kelly has taken the time to break these steps
down, document them, and test them on real children. There are several shoe
tying books on the market, but this one is specifically designed for children
with special needs. She has seen what trips them up, and confuses them, and
has designed this book to make the process fun, and most importantly successful
for our kids. Thanks, Kelly!
